Introduction to Spanish (entering K & 1)
Hola Amigos! Join us for an introduction to the Spanish language through games, songs, crafts and stories. We will also learn about the culture of Spain and Mexico: their holidays, native animals, food and more! Young children are developmentally ready to learn a second language, especially in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
Hands on Math (entering K & 1)
This class will be filled with math activities involving manipulatives designed to supplement any K-1 math program. Young children can successfully learn math concepts through hands-on experiences. Using manipulatives actively involves children in the learning process as they explore mathematical concepts.
Go For the Gold Reading Class (entering 2)
Calling all Olympic champions! On your mark, get set, go! Get ready for 6 classes of gold medal reading, writing, and retelling. This fun class will reinforce challenges and “hurdles” in first grade and give your Olympian a “jump start” into second grade! Through a variety of reading and writing activities, children will strengthen their reading fluency, decoding strategies, comprehension, and writing in an interactive learning environment. So…let the games begin, join the team, reach for the gold, cross the finish line, and we’ll all be winners together!
“Show Me” Science (entering Grades 2-3)
In this hands-on class, students will use the scientific method (observation, hypothesis, prediction, experimentation, and conclusion) to explore things in the world around them. Students will learn about different principles of science and explore these concepts with projects and experiments that will be carried out in class.
Reader’s Theater (entering Grade 3)
Reader’s Theater is an exciting way to help children improve reading fluency, text comprehension and vocabulary development. Children who learn to read a passage expressively or retell a story dramatically come to a better understanding of its meaning. The class will include activities promoting reading, speaking and listening while providing a fun environment.
“Everyday Math” Mania (entering Grades 2-3 & 4-5)
Boost your child’s math skills and prepare them for the Everyday Math challenges to come in the next school year with this dynamic, fun-filled course. Sessions will be chock-full of new and familiar Everyday Math games, exciting ways to practice math facts, and interactive activities to reinforce concepts learned and preview new skills.
Writing Class (entering Grades 4-5)
Find enjoyment in sharing ideas on paper while learning proper form. Also, explore the creativity within as you express yourself with competence. This class will work on adding description and details to stories.
Natural Science (entering Grades 4-5)
Does your child like learning about plants and animals? Help them become a budding naturalist as they study the plants and animals found in New England habitats. Students will learn how to track animals, the names of plants, and how animals behave on land and at sea. Each week will focus on a different habitat and how the plants and animals within that habitat interact with each other. All sessions take place at Brainwaves. Habitats covered: New England forest, lakes and ponds, roadside meadows and backyards, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Sentence & Paragraph: Putting the Pieces of the Puzzle Together (entering Grades 4-5)
Knowing how to write clear and well organized sentences and paragraphs will go a long way toward the success of any student’s writing. When students realize that longer pieces of writing are written one sentence at a time, they will feel empowered as capable and effective writers.
Reading Detectives (entering Grades 4-5)
Read fun mysteries while searching for the clues to comprehension. The class focus on vocabulary, identifying the main idea and making inferences will help develop thinking skills that students need to be successful in the classroom.
Power House Science (entering Grades 6-7)
Students will explore renewable and regenerative energies while constructing a scale model of the house of the 21st Century. Students will learn about energy from the sun, wind, plants, and electrochemical reactions and how to transform, store and use these forms of energy. Basic concepts in the physical sciences will be explored in this hands-on class.
Keyboarding Class (entering Grades 6-7)
This class is designed to teach, develop and practice -- step by step -- typing skills. As more and more school work is being accomplished on the computer, this class will help eliminate the reliance on the “hunt & peck” method, reinforce proper finger placement and build the foundation for proper keyboarding skills so necessary for the future. Students must bring their own laptops to class.
Science: Car of the Future (entering Grades 7-8)
Class participants will help build a car that runs on water and experiment with the same cutting-edge technology that major car manufacturers are trying to make viable. Class will be using the Thames & Kosmos “Fuel Cell Car & Experiment Kit”.
Middle School Spanish (entering Grades 7-8)
Be prepared for the upcoming school year with this middle school Spanish course. Whether new to Spanish or needing an updated review of a previous Spanish class, this course will help any student be one step ahead of expectations in the fall.
Creative Writing (entering Grades 7-8)
Creative writing is one of the most stimulating and fulfilling ways to express yourself. This writing class will expand your child’s powers of observation, imagination, and language. He or she will be exposed to various forms of creative writing in the fields of prose fiction and nonfiction in a fun and enjoyable class format.
Reading for Enjoyment (entering Grade 6-7 & 8-9)
American novelist Alice Hoffman once claimed, “Books may well be the only true magic.” Explore new places, meet great characters and contemplate new ideas in a fun, book club format!
Historical Literature (entering Grade 6-7 & 8-9)
While six weeks is never enough time to explore great historical literature, it’s a great place to start! In this course students will focus on historical fiction and nonfiction. Students will discuss key elements of plots and characters and develop thesis statements that are supported by elements of the books in a book club format.
Summer Reading Strategies (entering Grade 6-7 & 8-9)
Brains need exercise in the summer too! Keep your brain moving by reading and tuning your reading strategies. In this course students will focus on books on local middle schools’ “Required and/or Recommended Reading” lists. Students will discuss key elements of plots and characters and develop thesis statements that are supported by elements of the books.
Preparation for the SSAT Exam (entering Grade 8)
Successful test takers not only possess the necessary academic skills but also understand how to take the SSAT test. Through this class, students will review academic skills and learn practical, powerful and up-to-date test taking strategies. Class fee includes materials.
Preparation for Algebra (entering Grade 8-9)
Research shows that algebra is the gateway to success for most students. There is a positive correlation between completing algebra and being college bound. This class will provide your child with the tools necessary to get his or her algebra education going in the right direction.
Preparation for the SAT Exam
Get a jump on this important college admissions test. Class will include a complete review of all subjects on the SAT test, as well as test taking strategies and a solid understanding of the test format. This small class format of 4 students allows each student to receive individualized instruction. Class fee includes materials.
Time of class will be established to accommodate enrolled students.

DAY CAMP & Week Long Programs
Rocket into Reading (entering K, 1) Monday - Friday 9 - 11:45 am
Give your child the boost he or she needs to Rocket into Reading! To get started, your child will be given a short assessment prior to the first class to determine current skill levels and achievement targets. Each week of comprehensive literacy instruction will include activities addressing phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, sight words, listening comprehension, writing, and more! Program will include games, read aloud, shared book experiences, and practice in all areas of reading. Rocket into Reading is sure to be a fun and confidence-building reading experience for your child. This is the 5th year the program has been offered and classes fill quickly.

Integrating Art & Writing (entering Grade 2-3) Monday - Friday 9:00 am – 11:45 am
During this one week workshop, your child will create a storyboard that includes character(s), setting, problem and solution. Children will create crayon-resist watercolor paintings that will be used to inspire the creative writing process. The finished product will be laminated and bound. Week of August 10

Collage & Poetry Creations (entering Grade 2-3) Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 11:45 am
This one week workshop will introduce your child to many techniques of watercolor painting used to create a variety of textured papers. The papers will then be used to make collage artwork (similar to the technique used by Eric Carle). Children will then write various types of poetry to accompany their pieces of art.

Poetry Camp (entering Grade 4-5) Monday - Friday 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Poetry is all around us. It’s the jingle of jump rope chants, television commercials and the words of songs we like. Poetry is popular because it is fun and interesting. In this class your child will find guidance in reading, appreciating and writing all different kinds of poetry. It will inspire your child to achieve a greater appreciation of poetry.
Week of July 13, August 10 $99 per week
Note Taking, Test Taking & Organizational Skills (ent. Gr. 6-8) M - F 2 pm – 3 pm
Preparing for middle and high school does not need to be overwhelming! In this class, students will learn methods and strategies to become efficient note takers and confident test takers. Students will also receive methods and strategies for organizing themselves throughout the school year so they may maximize their successes both in and out of the classroom. Week of July 6 $99
The 5 Paragraph Essay (entering Grade 6-8) Monday - Friday 3 pm – 4 pm
One of the key elements to being successful in middle and high school is a student’s ability to write a five paragraph essay. This essay format is common practice for language arts, science and social studies classes, and will prepare students for writing beyond the five paragraph essay. In becoming confident in this practice, students will gain the necessary tools for successful writing in their academic careers. Week of July 6 $99
